Course Description:
Turn local plants into pulp for handmade paper to use in your work. We’ll prepare both invasive and non-invasive plants, learn how to prepare the fibers, and how to form unique and beautiful sheets of fibrous paper. This class does vary seasonally, can be repeated, and is great for any level of papermaking experience.

Course Description:
We will create armatures using reed with linen thread and then apply handmade linen paper, from this class, to the forms. The forms can be very organic or more controlled by using moulds; we will explore both.

JAPANESE PAPERMAKING AND BOOK BINDING WORKSHOP

Course Description:
On day one (Saturday) of this weekend intensive, we will make Japanese paper, washi, by preparing and beating locally harvested mulberry fiber using traditional and adapted tools and techniques. This beautiful paper is well known for its translucency, strength, and absolute beauty. 

On day two (Sunday) we will work with Japanese book binding techniques to learn Japanese book binding styles using the paper made on day one of this intensive. These are lovely gifts or great keepers for your own journal work.

Join us for this three hour introduction to hand papermaking. We will explore traditionally used European (western) paper fibers such as linen and cotton, and pulp made from everyday recyclable paper products. We will learn about tools and equipment, sheet forming and decorative techniques, use of color, pressing and drying, and the versatility handmade paper has to offer. This hands-on class is without stress or expectation. You will finish the day with an inspiring collection of handmade paper and an understanding of how to continue this work at home. Additional information will be sent to students following registration.

Artist Biography:
Sharon Yonenaka began her papermaking journey with an immersive 2-days at Women’s Studio Workshop in Rosendale, NY. A few later, she became an apprentice and then instructor at Magnolia Editions, Paper in Oakland, CA where she continued working until moving to Grass Valley. She has been working with students and artists ever since through her local studio facility, Kodama Papermaking. Hand papermaking has remained an important part of her life alongside raising a family and learning to embrace all of life’s adventures and challenges.
