Both of this year's featured Summer Invitational Show Artists have long standing histories at ASiF...
For more than a decade Warren Knox has taken on the hosting of weekly artist gatherings, acting as facilitator for ASiF's Open Studio Painter’s Membership Program. The group gladly accepts new members and meets every Tuesday morning to paint together and create community around their artistic endeavors. This non instructed program is open to artists of all levels inviting its members to gather, paint, share opportunities and techniques and to talk about their art in ongoing weekly discussions and critiques.
Kiely deViveiros Wood is a painter whose own personal history at ASiF also spans more than a decade. At the age of eleven her artist-mother, Heather deViveiros, joined ASiF as a resident artist, renting a private studio space - making for many an art filled afternoon for Kiely - and giving her a glimpse at what her own artistic future could be at her very own childhood digs! Kiely has since participated in ASiF's Annual Smallworks Holiday Show for two years running - selling almost every single one of her paintings!
About Kiely deViveiros Wood: Kiely deViveiros Wood is an artist who is new to painting - though an old soul when it comes to her search for meaning and purpose in her creativity. Her works in acrylics explore the power and beauty of nature through careful renderings of the world as she sees it… lush and alive valleys dotted with colorful flowers, light filled clouds above desolate mountain ranges - and the mysteriously beautiful darkness of the deep woods. Kiely grew up surrounded by art. Both her mother, Heather deViveiros, and her (late) grandmother, Betty deViveiros are/were artists - as was her late grandfather, Don deViveiros, an alumni painting professor at the California College of the Arts from 1970 - 1992 - all of whom have modeled their own deep connections to their creative lives - making the idea of a career as an artist a very real aspiration for her. While Kiely's artistic talents were apparent to all who witnessed her intensely detailed drawings as a teen and young adult, it was not until two and a half years ago when she began painting in acrylics that her deeply intuitive perception of color, light and the innate luminosity of her own artistic perspective and presence was unveiled.
In Kiely's words... "The thing I love about painting is the ability to create an image from a feeling that reflects back to me what I’ve created... painting places I would like to be, as if I could go into the painting and be there. Growing up in the woods and being outdoors is something I've always loved. The peace and stillness I feel in nature is one of the things I want to share through my painting with the viewer. I love playing with light and shadow, depth and detail, and dynamic colors that show up in the natural world. When I am able to execute the vision I have on to a panel it brings a sense of fulfillment. I have learned so much though the process of creative expression and will always be excited to grow and learn in new ways as an artist - and to be able to share it with others.
About Warren Knox: Warren Knox is a landscape painter who combinines a love for plein air painting with a studio art practice. His paintings are beautifully rendered depictions of the world he sees... meandering rivers, dense forests and mountainous hillsides. His works embody artistic confidence with the deliberate use of deep, rich, high contrasting color - often laid boldly against the white of the page. Using a range of media including pencil, watercolor, acrylics, gouache, oils and pastels, his paintings seem to tokenize places that are special to him: Immense canyons remembered from his youth; a ramshackle barn falling to pieces on a hillside; the view of a gorgeous river from a peak only he has seen. While his first drawings were attempts as an eight year old, to copy the Sunday comics using crayons, it was not until later in life when his scientific career led him to study the detailed drawings of renowned Robert Hooke, the inventor of the compound microscope, that he first began a serious study of art. Warren's interest in understanding how information was encoded into Hooke's drawings of minute critters and things no one else had ever seen were the impetus behind Warren’s decision to teach himself to draw. With the help and encouragement of local artist friends and workshops with artists like Armin Mersmann, Judy Betts and Stephen Quiller - Warren developed this interest into a love of art - both as an artist and an avid art collector - melding his scientific and mathematical interest in studies of perspective, light and color into what has become a life long art practice.
In Warren’s words… “Drawing and painting is a way to find one’s focus, a way to pull one’s mind out of the inattentive dither that is, more often than not, its customary state. Normally we drift along in the noise and dust of the herd, eyes on the back just in front us, and our consciousness devoted mostly to keeping up and not bumping into things. Art breaks the lockstep herd instinct and focuses the mind on the things that would otherwise be blindly bypassed. It simultaneously opens one’s eyes to seeing anew, and raises them to horizons unimagined. It takes one where words and thoughts are both insufficient and unnecessary -- where perception is more primitive and more sophisticated than rational thought. It is my goal to capture the beauty I find with this altered focus and pass it on to the viewer. I hope not to challenge your thoughts, but to visually transmit my appreciation of the world around us.”
