Oil Painter…

ARTIST STATEMENT
My art is a world within a world where the expanse of nature intersects with the rigidness of being human. Our limited existence bleeds into the elusiveness of nature: the curve of a leaf, a bird in snow, the movement of water, shadows from a tree, and mosaics of clouds.
Expressing the subtle and evolving dynamics of nature, my art helps me understand my place in the world through the language of the environment, by way of form, color, space, canvas and paint. I explore the tradition of plein air painting and wildlife art with a sensibility to the complexity of my feelings and evolving perceptions of the changing environment.
I paint on location, returning repeatedly to make drawings and paintings of one subject: a tree, a reflection, a species of bird, a shadow, a pinecone. I often revisit the same subject months or years later. Trees are an ongoing love story which began when I was a child growing up among giant sequoia, ponderosa pine and cedar trees in Lake Tahoe.
Using oil paints, oil pastels, and canvas are how I am most able to articulate my ideas. I have painted in oils for 23 years; I appreciate the ability to manipulate the paint after it has been put down and work within its varied drying times. Drawing into wet paint with oil pastels accentuates elements in the painting and adds the intimacy of lines drawn by hand.
I paint reflections of our natural world, stopping time to take you into this fragile inner place, so that you may breathe into the expansiveness inside and around you.
