In-person at ASiF Studios - with Margaret Lindsey
$100, including materials -
Upcoming Workshop Dates TBA
Young artists with art experience or adult-teen teams encouraged.
Ages 14 & up.
Workshop description: A taste of creativity with Mandalas... this mixed-media mandala experience is an introduction to the ancient-yet-modern practice of art-making within the framework of a circle. The activities we’ll enjoy include short experiential guided meditations inspired by different mandala traditions, followed by directed circle-making practices—a few of the practices that will be offered in greater depth in Margaret’s 4 week series. We will sample several different modes of expression, with an emphasis on personal inquiry. Creating within a circle is deeply grounding, offering a holistic container for whatever is being expressed, regardless of the media used.
All art materials will be supplied, and all pieces you make will go home with you.
No art or mandala experience is necessary—just a willingness to play and explore creatively.

Class description: inquiry and creative play with mandalas. This course evolved from a popular seminar Margaret taught for years at JFK University’s Arts & Consciousness Program. It features a sequence of circle-making activities, including short experiential guided meditations inspired by different mandala traditions, followed by directed mandala-making practices in class. Suggested artmaking at home deepens the process. A mandala (the sanskrit word for “circle”) can be created playfully or seriously, it can be simple or elaborate, it can be interacted with in community, it can be prayer or play, or be a quite personal circular expression of just about any subject.
In this 4-week series, you will participate in a variety of authentic ways to creatively center yourself, working with time-tested circular templates to map, inquire into, and understand your lived life. Art-making with mandalas can help us visually integrate various parts of ourselves or tour world into a meaningful whole. The mandalas we make during class will be warm-ups and seed ideas, essentially, for the personal work you choose to do on your own at home, with your own unique collection of art supplies.

ART & SYMBOLIC PROCESS happens through intensive creative personal investigation with a single, personally selected symbol. Guided artmaking and other creative practices make this a rich investigation…
Art & Symbolic Process awakens the relationship between an individual and their world. An incredible shift of awareness is driven by the artwork each person makes with their individual symbol, selected at the beginning of the course, which becomes the focus and driver for all of the art that is created. Margaret guides students during each session through different transformative art processes with their symbol, which creates a doorway for engaging the senses, for touching in with the innate knowing within themselves. This investigation is potent, powerful, and authentic. Participants experience an expansion of consciousness, heightening an awareness of the forces affecting one’s personal life and culture. all through the lens of one self-selected symbol. It works.
Your symbol could be a power animal or spirit symbol, or simply an everyday object, creature or place that can serve as a fresh lens for our creative inquiry. Usually we work with something tangible in the world, rather than abstract concepts: a bone, a fox, a cup, a lake, a doorway, a hand…the symbol becomes a unique and personal lens for sensing the world more dimensionally.
Students can work in any media they prefer for their at-home work. The processes that we do in class will use a variety of materials that Margaret will supply, supplemented by each student’s own art kit. Students are required to come to class with a journal, art pad, and basic art supplies: pencils, pens, and some way to work in in color. A suggested materials list will be supplied.

You will experience a hands-on creative approach to tapping into your senses--ways to creatively self-reflect and connect with your unique physical and imaginative presence. Short, guided meditations will get you going, with artmaking as the medium that allows your unconscious ideas to flow freely. Paint, pastels, and markers are your main tools, as well as anything else you can gather or dream up that is available to you at home. Photos for collage? clay? watercolor crayons? A workshop for those who want to respond to nature creatively…
workshop description: This is a different kind of “realism”—we will meditate with actual flowers, leaves, feathers, roots, and rocks, and experiment creatively with ways to respond. Perhaps the texture or the color touches us the most, and we will paint or draw in response to THAT. The art we make will express how we feel about what we see, smell and touch, and not necessarily be an illustration of the original. We may print with some materials, or make stencils. Each artist will create in response to their own senses and personal perceptions..
This is what Margaret calls “response art”. For example, your response to a gorgeous yellow rose might be to slather a piece of paper with every imaginable color of yellow…a manzanita branch could get made into a small twisted ladder…a leaf might be used to print the pattern of its veins on your paper…a rock might be dipped into water and become an ochre colored brush…
This class will be a small group (8 participants, max)
