Chic Lotz is a master potter, teacher and glaze artist. She is known nationally for her week-long, hands-on workshop Glaze Basics: Line Blends for Developing Surface and Color which she has offered in art centers and colleges around the US and Canada, as well as in her home studio in Grass Valley.

After discovering the green glaze in her bowl had disappeared into her salad dressing, she became determined to learn how to create her own food-safe glazes. This led her to study with the top experts in the field – Robin Hopper, John Hesselberth and Ron Roy. She is in the process of writing Glaze Basics – a Workbook for Beginners as well as designing an on-line glaze chemistry workshop which will be available in the near future.

Over the years her work has been exhibited and sold in many galleries across the US, most notably the Carnegie Museum Gift Shop, and the Frank Lloyd Wright Falling Water Gift Shop, both in Pittsburgh, PA, as well as the Savannah College of Art & Design Gift Shop in Savannah, GA, and the Del Mano Gallery in Los Angeles, CA. Chic’s large ceramic platters are featured in two books: Making Marks by Robin Hopper and 500 Platters published by Lark Books.

“As my hands dance with the clay spinning on the wheel, my mind comes into stillness and the co-creative process begins. Sometimes the clay leads and other times I direct where we go together. I like to alter thrown forms, pushing the clay here and pulling it there to see what might emerge. The end result is simple yet elegant beauty. I really enjoy designing my own custom glazes which enhance the shape and texture of my work.”
