CALL TO ARTISTS…
ASiF invites artists to explore the art of the MASK!

Masks have long been created for use in ceremonial or theatrical settings to explore or define human relationship between individuals and with the world. Historians propose, that - as masks have been removed from their original context of adornment in ceremony and performance, showing up in the world as wall art and museum objects, that they have lost their potential to convey the larger messages they’ve historically so aptly conveyed about life and humanity. This is your challenge!

Masks as art are rich in symbology and emotion… For this exhibit masks may be inspired by the human face, animals, nature or any concept or idea the artist chooses to interpret.

“Masked” is a juried exhibition…

- Originality and creative use of materials are a must.
- Masks should be ready to hang, low relief wall forms.
- All media are welcome & there are no size limitations.
- Up to two masks per artist may be submitted.
- Commercial-made/store-bought mask forms are acceptable for painters using them as a substrate for paintings.
- Collaborative works between 3D and 2D artists are strongly encouraged!

Eligibility and Requirements:

  • Submit quality photographs by August 19 - Emailed to: linschiffner@gmail.com 

  • All work must be dry, ready to hang LOW RELIEF WALL FORMS that secure to the wall with wires or on notches.

  • Accepted entries to be accompanied by a brief artist’s statement (100 words or less) that addresses the source of inspiration for the mask; medium/materials /techniques used to make the piece.  This information will be included on the gallery label.

  • ASiF may disqualify pieces upon delivery which have not been accurately represented in digital image form, or which otherwise do not meet ASiF Art Specs and Show Requirements. 

Entry Fee and Commissions:

  • $20 entry fee for 1 – 2 masks.  

  • 40% (20% for ASiF Residents) commission on sales. will be retained for gallery sales

  • Entry fees cover accepted artworks only and are paid upon delivery.

Dates & Deadlines:

  • Submit Entries between:  Monday, July 1 to Monday, August 19

  • Notification of Acceptance: Monday, August 26

  • Delivery of Art:  Tuesday, September 3, 10:00 am to 4:00 pm

  • Show Runs:  September 5 - September 28

  • Opening Reception:  Friday, September 13, 5:00 to 8:00 pm

  • Art Pick-Up:  Tuesday, October 1, 10:00 pm to 4:00 pmand
